Going Green
Building a more sustainable future – one GREEN building at a time
We're an avid supporter of sustainable development - "green
building" - practices, which help preserve our natural resources
and a healthy environment. And through our support of woman and minority-owned
business, mentoring and scholarship programs, we ensure that we give back
to the people and places that help make us strong.
Turner is on the forefront of sustainable construction and creates buildings that have a
positive impact on the surrounding environment and the people working in them.
Green Building at Turner Construction
Turner Construction Turns Green
Greening our Operations More than $3 billion in LEED Certified projects and over $8 billion in LEED Registered
projects to date.
- Projects
Turner has experience on more than 350 Green building projects, including 85 U.S. Green
Building council LEED Certified projects completed and an additional 130 projects that are
LEED Registered. This experience, which includes projects in every region of the country and
all market sectors, has enabled us to compile a detailed databank of cost-effective Green
materials, processes and suppliers to assist clients.
- Construction Waste Recycling
The goal of Turner’s national construction waste recycling program is to recycle a minimum
of 50 percent of construction debris and demolition on our projects. In the last three years,
we have reported diverting over 225,000 tons of construction waste on 500 projects. In addition,
we have developed an on-line waste tool to automate, simplify, and significantly increase
reporting on our projects.
- Field Operations
To encourage the successful delivery of Green building projects,
Turner has developed a Green Operations Manual to provide a detailed set of instructions that outlines each step for
Turner team member. We have also created tools and procedures to help calculate, track, and
document Green project activities during all project phases.
Green Training All new employees are trained in Green building practices since 2005.
- LEED Accredited Professionals
Turner employs more LEED Accredited Professionals than any other firm in the industry.
To date, we have more than 1,100 LEED APs on staff – more than ten times the number since 2005.
- Staff Development
Turner provides training in Green design and construction to all new hires. More than
1,500 employees have been trained in this core competency. In addition, Turner has developed
jointly with the USGBC "The Essentials of LEED Professional Accreditation," an on-line
training course that is available to all Turner employees and to the general public.
Green Research and Education We are committed to increasing the adoption of Green building practices.
- Knowledge Sharing
Turner has committed to investing resources in research to gain knowledge for the company
and the industry about the benefits of building Green. Following Turner?s first Green
building survey in 2004, the company has conducted, supported and sponsored additional
surveys in the education and healthcare sectors, and in general Green building activities.
In addition, in order to promote education and knowledge sharing, Turner has hosted and
sponsored numerous educational conferences attended by educators, administrators and
construction industry participants.

Turner's 20th Annual Softball
Tournament Raises Over $40,000 for Charity
More
than 300 Turner employees from 20 offices gathered in Cincinnati to participate
in the 20th annual Turner softball tournament. Each of the 20 participating
offices contributed $1,000 for the winning team to donate to a charity
of their choice. With Peter Davoren in attendance to throw out the first
pitch, he announced that their $20,000 donation would be matched at the
national level. In addition, many of the teams used the opportunity to
raise money for charity, soliciting donations for each run scored.
This was the third year that the New Jersey office swept the tournament
and won the Greg L. Terhar Memorial Trophy. The traveling trophy is named
after the former SPD Manager in Cincinnati who was instrumental in helping
to establish the softball tournament.
The New Jersey team donated part of the money raised to the Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Foundation and gave the team from Washington
D.C. the rest of the $40,000 to donate to the Pediatric Oncology Family
Support Fund at INOVA Fairfax Hospital for Children.
Turner's Washington D.C. office came in second and the Dallas office was
third. Dave Hilts, from the New Jersey office, was named MVP and Ryan
West, also from New Jersey, was named "Home Run King" for his
fifth time.

Turner Lends a Helping Hand In San Diego
On
Friday June 6th, Turner San Diego attended the Habitat for Humanity House
Blessing Ceremony which was the culmination of an intense 5 day Home Builders
Blitz. Turner was thanked for their support and unending project dedication.
Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood, Celebrity Guest Spokesperson Didiayer Snyder
from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was present to honor the group of
volunteers who built 4 homes in 5 days. Turner Construction and Viking
Construction, the only 2 construction companies involved, were commended
for "stepping up to build a home each, even though they are commercial
builders." The traditional homebuilders did not support the Habitat

Turner Reaches Out in Boston
Staff
from Turner's Massachusetts General Hospital project in Boston recently
provided a hospital patient with a special purpose. A retired machinist
who had been in the hospital for months awaiting a heart and kidney transplant
had begun to be in low spirits. His hospital room happened to overlook
Turner's jobsite at the hospital and his caregivers reached out to Turner
for help.
Turner's Brian Chase, Project Executive, Allison Ferrari, Equal Employment
Opportunity Coordinator, and Doug LaPlante, Safety Superintendent, quickly
took action. They outfitted the patient with Turner gear, including a
fleece jacket and a personalized hard hat. Turner staff gave him the honorary
title of "Window Superintendent" and often stopped by to visit.
In addition, a large sign with the patient's name was placed in his window
so workers could wave to him from the jobsite.
"This patient's story touched the Turner crew, and they rose to
the occasion. Their support and encouragement made all the difference
to Bob and their friendship continues," said a spokeswoman for Massachusetts
General Hospital.
The patient has since successfully received his transplant and has returned
home.
Turner's Boston office is serving as the general contractor for The Massachusetts
General Hospital 'Building for the Third Century' project. The scope of
work includes a 500,000 sq. ft. inpatient building which will increase
the emergency department capacity by 16,000 sq. ft., add 16 same-day surgery
and interventional radiology suites, 28 operating rooms, 22 ICU rooms,
128 patient rooms as well as a 35,000 sq. ft. combined Radiation/Onclogy
Department. Upon completion in 2011, the project is on track to receive
a LEED Silver Certification from the USGBC.
