Turner's 20th Annual Softball Tournament Raises Over $40,000 for Charity

More than 300 Turner employees from 20 offices gathered in Cincinnati to participate in the 20th annual Turner softball tournament. Each of the 20 participating offices contributed $1,000 for the winning team to donate to a charity of their choice. With Peter Davoren in attendance to throw out the first pitch, he announced that their $20,000 donation would be matched at the national level. In addition, many of the teams used the opportunity to raise money for charity, soliciting donations for each run scored.

This was the third year that the New Jersey office swept the tournament and won the Greg L. Terhar Memorial Trophy. The traveling trophy is named after the former SPD Manager in Cincinnati who was instrumental in helping to establish the softball tournament.

The New Jersey team donated part of the money raised to the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Foundation and gave the team from Washington D.C. the rest of the $40,000 to donate to the Pediatric Oncology Family Support Fund at INOVA Fairfax Hospital for Children.

Turner's Washington D.C. office came in second and the Dallas office was third. Dave Hilts, from the New Jersey office, was named MVP and Ryan West, also from New Jersey, was named "Home Run King" for his fifth time.

Prior to softball tournament, over 300 Turner staff and family members attended the Cincinnati Reds vs. Colorado Rockies game together.

Participating offices were: Arizona, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Chicago, Cleveland and Columbus, Dallas, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Miami, New Jersey, New York, Cleveland, Toledo, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, TKN, Tompkins, Turner Universal and Washington D.C

Turner Reaches Out in Boston

Staff from Turner's Massachusetts General Hospital project in Boston recently provided a hospital patient with a special purpose. A retired machinist who had been in the hospital for months awaiting a heart and kidney transplant had begun to be in low spirits. His hospital room happened to overlook Turner's jobsite at the hospital and his caregivers reached out to Turner for help.

Turner's Brian Chase, Project Executive, Allison Ferrari, Equal Employment Opportunity Coordinator, and Doug LaPlante, Safety Superintendent, quickly took action. They outfitted the patient with Turner gear, including a fleece jacket and a personalized hard hat. Turner staff gave him the honorary title of "Window Superintendent" and often stopped by to visit. In addition, a large sign with the patient's name was placed in his window so workers could wave to him from the jobsite.

"This patient's story touched the Turner crew, and they rose to the occasion. Their support and encouragement made all the difference to Bob and their friendship continues," said a spokeswoman for Massachusetts General Hospital.

The patient has since successfully received his transplant and has returned home.

Turner's Boston office is serving as the general contractor for The Massachusetts General Hospital 'Building for the Third Century' project. The scope of work includes a 500,000 sq. ft. inpatient building which will increase the emergency department capacity by 16,000 sq. ft., add 16 same-day surgery and interventional radiology suites, 28 operating rooms, 22 ICU rooms, 128 patient rooms as well as a 35,000 sq. ft. combined Radiation/Onclogy Department. Upon completion in 2011, the project is on track to receive a LEED Silver Certification from the USGBC.
